Which One Should You Update First?
There's no strict rule, but most people update their driving licence first, since DVLA's process is simpler, and use the updated licence as part of their supporting evidence when they apply to change their passport. It isn't required to do it in this order, it's simply the sequence most people find easiest.
Updating Your Driving Licence (DVLA)
To update the name on your driving licence, DVLA will need:
- Your original, signed and witnessed deed poll (an original certified copy, not a photocopy)
- Your current photocard driving licence
- A completed D1 form (for a paper application) or the equivalent online process via GOV.UK
DVLA does not charge a fee simply to update your name, only a fee applies if you also need a replacement photocard for another reason, such as loss or damage. Processing times vary, check the current guidance on GOV.UK before applying.
Updating Your Passport (HM Passport Office)
To update your passport, HM Passport Office will need:
- Your original, signed and witnessed deed poll (an original certified copy)
- A completed passport application form, along with your current passport
- A passport-standard photo and the applicable passport fee
Passport fees and processing times change from time to time, always check the current figures directly on GOV.UK before you apply, rather than relying on a figure quoted elsewhere.
Why Certified Copies Matter Here
Most organisations, DVLA and HM Passport Office included, require an original certified copy of your deed poll, not a photocopy, and they generally don't return it to you. This is why most people order more than one copy at the outset, rather than needing to reorder partway through updating their records.
